Het Krakeel is a housing cooperative in The Hague, currently in the initiation phase. We are negotiating possible locations with the municipality and developers. Together with a group of people who got a taste of collective living in Delft, I joined as one of the initiators, pushing for this to happen. The group has grown over time, and there is now a larger community of people who want to live there and work on and follow the project.
since 2023
"Het Krakeel" translates to "starting an argument," symbolising our intention to challenge the status quo of the housing market. We came together out of frustration with the housing market, where homes are treated as products for speculation rather than places to live. For us, housing is a basic right. We want to create a long-term, affordable, and caring community, designed by and for the people who live there.

Our goal is to develop a multigenerational housing project with around 40 homes and plenty of shared spaces. We aim for a mix of social, mid-range, and free-sector rents, so people with different incomes can live together. We want to live in a place where people look after each other, share everyday tasks, and feel connected to both the building and the neighbourhood. Sustainability also plays an important role, with ambitions for an energy efficient, climate resilient building that is run with care for the environment.

Het Krakeel is an opportunity for me to see through a cooperative project really from the beginning. From the first meetings and shaping our vision, group sessions, inspiration trips, setting up a legal structure, lobbying the municipality, securing partners, and keeping the energy in the group alive through dinners and events. It shows me how much sustained effort and time it takes to get a housing project off the ground.
